The Process – Design
From the initial consultation, where possible, we will visit the location, take sizes and photographs followed by researching and developing concepts inspired by discussions with you the client alongside ideas sourced from the local environment and local history.
The creative process then begins with drawings and designs being developed,
sometimes simultaneously, pen and paper at the drawing board, hammer and iron at the forge as we explore textures, shapes and form appropriate to the design.
Finally, working drawings will be presented for approval and where required technical and structural drawings can also be prepared for larger scale public art projects.

Commissioning our metalwork is an interactive and enlightening experience between the design team, the artist blacksmiths and you, the client, a process that, we at Ratho Byres Forge, enjoy and encourage.
Experienced in designing and forging bespoke artistic metalwork to suit a wide range of requirements from private homes to large scale public art, we have the capacity to take each project from your initial conceptual idea through to final installation.
