Carbon Tower - A History of Mining The sculpture depicts the story of coal, the plants, the community, and the mechanisation of the coal industry. The gathering and burning of coal as a fuel dates as far back as Roman times. Coal mining, probably Scotlands oldest major industry, began in the 13th Century. Although mining was dangerous and dirty work it was the lifeblood of many communities throughout East Lothian and Midlothian, the sculpture indicates that sense of community of the families from those mining villages.
