A New Year a new commission. Craig has started on a series of nine rose arches for Crathes Castle in Aberdeenshire. The head gardener discovered a colour lithograph by George Samual Elgood, in a gardening book from 1901 showing the Crathes Castle rose garden with a series of rose arches. We have been commissioned to create the rose arches to restore the rose garden to its former glory. Throw back Friday! The Maygate 1995 Pedestrian entrance gate to gardens of Abbot House. Gate is hinged on the central column. The gate design is based on the fable "The Trial of the Fox" by the 15th century Dunfermline poet, Robert Henryson. Throw back Friday! Drummond Place Bench - 1999 A memorial bench designed by Shona Johnson for one of the large private gardens in the New Town of Edinburgh. The three bold tapering elements which form the legs and the support for the back rest are forged down from 50 x 25mm with a 100 x 25mm block fire welded on at the base where they enter the ground. The pennanular elements holding the back rests in place are forged from 22mm round. Throw back Friday! Created in 2011 The Unicorn sits ontop of a stone pillar in St. Davids Gardens, Dalkeith. Historically, the area was part of the grounds of Newbattle Abbey, founded in 1140 by monks from Melrose Abbey. Inspiration for the metalwork came from the stone carvings found on the original pillars to the abbey gardens. Throw back Friday! Fish n Ships, Commercial Quay, Leith. Designed and made by Phil Johnson back in 1996! The ship acted as a seat on the inside and a signboard for local business on the outside. It featured in a local authors book about the adventures of Jerry the cat. A gem of a wrought iron forged rose. designed by Phoebe Anna Traquair and forged at the Thomas Hadden workshops in 1924 this rose is on the gate of the Phoebe Anna Traquair railings in Colinton. The metalwork was restored in 2007 by Chris Topp & Co and have recently undergone a spruce up and paint. The rose had detached from the gate and we had the pleasure of reattaching the rose to the gate with a non instrusive mechanical fixing. #rathobyresforge #phoebeannatraquair #wroughtiron #restoration #forgedrose
