The next commission, a series of three benches for Hillside Gardens in Aberdour are underway. Some interesting detailing on the backs and some juicy forging on the legs ahead. Each bench depicts a different area of interest relating to Aberdour. The paddle steamer, Fair Maid, that brought visitors from Edinburgh in late 18th Century. Inchcolm Abbey, founded in the 12th Century and the best preserved group of monasitc building in the country, and the game of Shinty played a Silversands, Aberdour. #rathobyresforge #artistblacksmith #scotland #sculpturalbench #storytelling #aberdour #fife

An interesting visit yesterday with a slide show, a walk around the workshop and a forging demo from Pete for a group of Presbytery Building officers for the Church of Scotland. This team providing advice and guidance to the church congregations, on the repair, maintenance and development of the Church of Scotland buildings. Their visit to the forge was to enable them to gain a better insight into the skills of the artist blacksmith and how that may inform the guidance they give in the upkeep of the historic buildings in their care. #rathobyresforge #forgevist #churchofscotland #artistblacksmith

These little cuties fledged over the weekend. The third brood raised in this nest. This has been the busiest year for swallows at the forge with at least five pairs nesting and raising at least two broods each. Fly high brave swallows and see you next spring!

The copper tulip windvane has now been installed in the garden in Elgin that it was designed for. The copper was rubbed back then polished with renaissance wax which will allow for slow and natural weathering of the copper. Mark and Colin are making progress on the Tulip Windvane but have lots of annealing, sinking, shaping and raising to manipulate each copper petal to the correct shape. And they all have to be the same! A wooden former has been made to get the correct lip at the top of each petal. Colin is creating a replica Roman dagger to be displayed alongside the original, which is thought to have been a ceremonial weapon, from what is thought to be the late 2nd early 3rd century. Commissioned by the National Museum of Scotland for a forthcoming exhibition - Roman Scotland: Life on the Edge of Empire at the Museum of Scotland in November. Vicky is texturing the sun ray element for the shield for a new high school in Rosyth - Caladonia High School, due to be opened in August. The shield was designed by students from Inverkeithing High School who will transfer to the new school once it is open. The Storm door ironmongery is progressing. A bit of a fiddle and needs to be incredibly accurate to ensure the large oak doors swing smoothly. The hinges are almost complete.
